It has become more and more evident that Identity Theft has reached scary proportions... So how can you protect yourself? 1. Keep an eye on your credit record... People still think that they can only get their credit report in the month of their birthday, this is in fact incorrect... You can get your free credit report once a year(Not only in your birth month) Go through your credit report... If something does not correspond contact the credit bureau immediately... 2. Do not ignore letters received in the post. I have personally made this mistake by thinking that it is infact marketing material, meanwhile someone stole my ID and opened an account at a retailer... Read your mail... The moment you get something suspicious report it... Same goes for phonecalls... Dont ignore them, rather find out what exactly is going on. 3. Ensure that you know where your ID book, credit card etc is at all times... If they get lost or stolen take immediate steps to have them stopped or replaced. 4. Shopping online??? Make sure that the site is infact secure (starting with https instead of http before the part) Online living has become such a part of our daily lives... just remember, if its to good to be true it probably is... Dont click on links in e-mails and if you dont know them they dont have to be your friend... AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: NO ONE GIVES AWAY ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY OUT OF THE KINDNESS OF THEIR HEARTS!!!!
