It has been a busy couple of days for remote police officers Downie and Conroy at Wurrumiyanga On Tuesday members of a local Tiwi family were having a meal next to the Tientebei waterhole which is situated approximately 10km east of Wurrumiyanga. This waterhole is a local freshwater man made billabong that was originally a water source for the community. It is now a popular swimming spot with both locals and tourists regularly swimming there. On this occasion the family present saw a crocodile swimming in the water hole about 5m from the bank. They estimated the crocodile to be between 1 and 2 metres in length. They believed that they also saw at least one other crocodile further out in the water. They alerted other residents of the community who in turn notified the Tiwi Land Council. At a meeting on Wednesday it was requested that Police attend to locate and deal appropriately with any crocodiles present. Police attended during the afternoon, closed the waterhole and conducted a search of the surrounding area. No crocodiles were sighted. On Thursday afternoon police attended and searched the banks of the waterhole for any signs of crocodile activity. Police located a dead 1.2 m long crocodile on the waterhole bank approx. 200m from the original sighting. Police were unable to ascertain the animal’s cause of death. Police Officers Dundee Downie and Croc Conroy will continue to monitor the water hole over the coming days and nights to check for further hazards. In the meantime the area remains closed for swimming.
