It has been brought to our attention that there has been some confusion regarding our outdoor play policy, so, we are copying our parent handbook policy here and our philosophy behind the policy for your review. Please dont hesitate to speak with any of our Administrators if you have any questions. ** Please dress your child accordingly and feel free to send in snow boots/snow pants.** Parent Handbook (excerpt): CLOTHING/OUTDOOR PLAY Clothing that is worn to the center should be comfortable and manageable to encourage independence. Please mark your childs clothing with his/her name. Jewelry or any object with a sharp point is greatly discouraged. PLEASE SEND A SPARE CHANGE OF CLOTHING TO STAY AT THE CENTER IN CASE OF ANY TYPE OF ACCIDENT. Tissues are always provided by the center. The policy at Breezy Knoll is for ALL children to participate in outdoor activities, weather and temperature permitting, regardless of the season. Exceptions will be made ONLY for: (1) Children who present a note from their MD to excuse them from outdoor play for a specified period of time; (2) A child who has become ill at the center during the day and who is awaiting pick-up from a parent. A child who is too ill to play outdoors (weather permitting), and who does not have an MD excuse from outdoor play upon arrival to the center, will be considered too ill to comfortably get through the day at the center. In the winter, please provide boots, hats, mittens, and snow pants. Please do not send scarves, as they present a potential choking hazard. Our philosophy behind the policy: We believe that children, regardless of age, should spend time outside each day in most weather. The children at Breezy Knoll go outside in the morning, and again in the afternoon. The duration of time that they spend outside depends upon how comfortable the weather is and we take our cues from the children. Children are adaptable by nature and enjoy the different opportunities for varied play in many kinds of weather, and we believe that this, in turn, makes for healthier children. Please keep this in mind when dressing your child in the morning and err on the side of preparedness. Feel free to send your child in layers or with an extra sweatshirt or sweater, to be stored in their cubby space, if you feel the weather warrants this. Outside play time is an opportunity for the children to be active, noisy, and excitable and may include nature activities, snow play, sand play, water play, and art activities, as well as imaginative play. There are many opportunities for the children to run, climb and express themselves physically and this is important for their gross motor development, as well as promoting general health and well-being. We bring water pitchers outside in the warmer weather, and encourage the children to drink frequently. Some families prefer to send their child in with a personal water bottle and these are welcomed outside as well.
