It has been read at countless funerals and used as a part of many prayers in times of crises. We never get tired of hearing it and seldom feel that it is out of place. When David was a boy, he spent years tending his father’s sheep. He knew the care that he and other shepherds gave to the sheep. David had a deep love for God and must have spent many hours as a shepherd thinking about God. It was from those experiences that the Shepherd King drew, when he wrote what you and I call “The Shepherd’s Psalm.” Few poems have every been written to compare with it. I encourage you to read this beautiful passage of scripture below in the traditional King James Version. Then I suggest you spend a few minutes, with your eyes closed, letting the visual images flow through your heart and mind. What a wonderful God we have. David described Him this way . . .The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his names sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (Psalm 23:1-6 KJV)
