It is Oregon Wine Month. Celebrate each week with the Edgefield wine of your choice...or sample this weeks special pick for $7 per glass. May 19-25 we are featuring our 2011 Cuveé de l’Abri Rouge. Dont forget to get your special passport stamp while you are here! Blend: 66% Syrah and 24% Grenache, both from Alder Ridge Vineyard, and 10% Touriga Naçional from Lonesome Spring Ranch Winemaking Notes: The Cuveé de l’Abri Rouge is inspired by the great blended red wines of the Southern Rhône region of France, the most famous being those from Chateauneuf-de-Pape. Typically, we use a higher percentage of Grenache to soften the Cuveé blend, but 2011 was a fairly cool vintage and late maturing varietals like Grenache struggled to develop in all but the very hottest vineyard sites. Thus this years’ offering contains more of the earlier-ripening Syrah, along with the inclusion of the quirky Touriga Naçional grape to provide added depth to the palate. Tasting Notes: The nose is bursting with bright red cherries, black raspberries and blueberries, with hints of cedar, allspice and a touch of mocha. On the palate it is medium-bodied with soft and smooth tannins. The flavors on the palate mirror the nose – primarily bright fruit up front softening to cedar and spice, with baking chocolate on the finish. Fun Fact: Cuveé de l’Abri Rouge is named for the Little Red Shed at Edgefield.
