It is Rabi-ul Awwal and many of our brothers and sisters are celebrating the birthday of our most beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam. While the love for the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam is an essential part of our faith (Imaan), however expressing that love must always be according to the teachings of our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam. Our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam never celebrated his birthday. When we look at the practices and words of his noble companions (who without any doubt loved him more than anyone could ever possibly conceive of), to our surprise; we find no evidence that any of those thousands of noble companions ever celebrated the birthday of our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam. If it was of part of our religion then our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam would surely have taught us because he has taught us all aspects of our religion. If it was part of expressing our love to the Prophet then again the noble companions would have thought of it and would have celebrated it but none of them ever thought of showing their love for the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam by celebrating his birthday and by considering it a day of Eid. In our religion, we only have two days of Eid and those are Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha. Eid Al-Milad does not exist in our Shariah. Furthermore, the date of the birth of our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam has always been debated amongst the historians, scholars and theologians. Some say he was born on the 2nd of Rabi-ul Awwal. Others say, he was born on 9th of Rabi-ul Awwal and some even say that he was born during the month of Ramadhan or another month other than Rabi-ul Awwal. The main and simple reason why there exists so much difference of opinion regarding the date of the birth of our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam is because it has never been a concern from the Islamic religious perspective as to what day the Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam was born because no special religious significance is connected to it. If it had any religious importance then there would not have been any debate about it. The origin of Milad (Mawlid) is traced back to the 4th Islamic century when some rulers of Fatimid dynasty introduced it to the people. Our success lies in following the footsteps of our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam and not in adding practices to the religion that Allah has already perfected. Our Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam did not leave any room for us to add bricks to the structure of this beautiful religion. The religion is already complete. We should not add more things to our perfect religion. Rather, we should try to practice whatever is already in the religion for us. May Allah guide us, have mercy upon us and enable us to follow the teachings of our beloved Prophet Sallallahu Alaihe Wa Sallam and not let us deviate from it.
