It is Sunday, so it must be Perth and another delicious four-course lunch! Sadly, it was the swan-song of the 51st Highland Division Officers Dinner Club - so few of these brave chaps are able to attend that it was agreed that this should be the last lunch. Appropriately, today is the anniversary of the Second Battle of El Alamein (23 October – 11 November 1942) - 7 SCOTS certainly insured that the club went out with a bang. We were also graced with the presence of a veteran who had fought with the Indian Army during the battle. I remember attending my first lunch as a guest some thirty or so years ago when it was a sizeable affair and many veterans attended - I sat and listened with awe to the matter-of-fact way in which their stories were discussed. Two of my fellow diners had never met before; however, they soon discovered that they had guarded the same bridge at the same time, but on opposite sides of the river!
