(It is a brave and long overdue step towards resolving the integration problems that plague Europe, where, increasingly, countries are arriving at the same unfortunate conclusion: multiculturalism, in the case of Muslim immigration, has been — and continues to be — an abject failure. To be clear, the “multiculturalism” Europeans speak of differs slightly from the American use of the term. That all men and women are created equal remains a fundamental given in Western democratic though. But for Europeans, the conflicting values between its Muslim immigrant (and often, non-immigrant) populations and Western views creates untenable tensions as Muslim groups demand the curtailing of rights to free expression, require women to remain at home, or continue the inhuman practice of female genital mutilation. Consequently, when religious practices and beliefs conflict with the law of a democratic land, Europeans are increasingly asking, where does “freedom of religion” end?)
