It is about time that I repost this letter that I wrote some time ago. TO: All the people in the United States who are breaking the law to be here: I sympathize with your reasons for being here. This country is one of the best places in the world to survive if you have nothing. All it takes is ambition and a willingness to work. Even at our worst times there is a job somewhere, no matter how small or low paying but a chance to keep going until something better is found. Dedication pays off. BUT, if you really want to live in this country do you want to start on a CRIMINAL basis? I am a product of LEGAL Immigrants who came from Norway and proud of it, BUT I am more proud to be a citizen of this UNITED STATES. My Grandfather spent many days aboard a small ship called a “sloop” which was not much more than a rowboat with sails. Many died at sea from disease because of crowded conditions or from rough seas. He came from Espe, Norway, a small village where limited farming was the only way to make a living. As was the custom with some Norwegians that came to this country my Grandfather, Sam Knutson, changed his last name to “Espe”, the name of the village he came from in Norway. He carried the name Espe with honor. Sam Espe is recorded as a pioneer in the Story City, Iowa area and had the reputation as an honest, hard working and law abiding man. You can google Espe, Norway and a map will come up. Just think about your Children and Grandchildren down the road. Will they be be proud of you and your journey into this country? Will they be able to say their Parents/Grandparents were law abiding people? Or will they brag about your CRIMINAL activities in this country? I am certainly NOT a Saint. I do believe that my Children were taught honesty, diligence and a good work ethic partially from my efforts just as my Father and Mother taught me the same. I can pass from this world knowing that I tried to be honest in all my dealings with others so my children don’t have to find excuses for my behavior. LEON ESPE 1SG, US Army, Ret
