It is always fascinating to look at older maps & to see how the landscape has changed in subtle ways over the years. This Bartholomew`s Half-Inch Map dates from 1948 & reveals a number of differences when compared with current day maps of the area, the most obvious being the lack of the many forests & plantations that now pockmark the landscape. Other differences include: -Windygate Hill instead of Windy Gyle -Battleshield Haugh, the name used by locals but spelt on current maps as Battleshiel Haugh -Hogden Law now spelt Hogdon Law -Lang Crags (above Harthope) now spelt Long Crags but perhaps explaining the `Lang` in Langleeford & Langlee Crags There will be others for you to spot. In the meantime the attached photos show the 4 features mentioned as appearing these days.
