It is always interesting to see what the soldiers we research choose for a profession when they returned from the war. Soldier Lemuel B. King has by far the most interesting profession I have come across so far! King went by the stage name Charles Hilton and became a local celebrity in and around Auburn, ME for his feats on the high wire as a tight rope walker. On July 4, 1872, Hilton walked across his tight rope, starting in Lewiston, ME and crossing the Great Falls into Auburn, ME once at 9am and once at 4pm. At 9am he did tricks including hanging from his rope and pushing a wheelbarrow with a heavy sack of flour on the rope. On his 4pm walk he walked out over the falls with a camp stove on his back, sat on the rope over the falls and cooked supper. He also once crossed his tight rope with a woman in his wheel barrow, paying her $500.00 to volunteer. Hilton was a Private in the 15th MA Infantry Co.
