It is an honor and a pleasure to contact you once again as the State Senator for the 27th District. Throughout the year, I will send regular updates to keep you informed about issues that affect the Genesee County area and our state. Please feel free to visit my website and contact my staff at (517) 373-0142 if you have any questions or concerns. In addition, be sure to like and follow me on Facebook and Twitter. Have Coffee with Jim Senator Jim Ananich will be holding coffee hours in Flint next Monday, February 3rd from 8:30AM-9:30AM at Tom’s Coney Cafe, 512 S. Dort Highway, 48503. Constituents are invited to join and express their concerns and discuss current issues relating to the district and state. Extreme Weather Town Hall Tomorrow In response to recent damaging winter weather, tomorrow, January 30th, Senator Jim Ananich and County Commissioner Brenda Clack will host a town hall to inform constituents of the existing state and local policies for handling emergencies of this nature. In addition, the town hall will allow constituents to provide feedback regarding the local response to these storms. The event will take place from 6:15PM-8:00PM in the Genesee County Administration Building, 1101 Beach St. Flint, 48502. Please consider attending the town hall to hear from a panel of local stakeholders and provide your feedback regarding the response. Polar Plunge Events Happening throughout Michigan To raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics Michigan, Polar Plunge events will be taking place throughout the state in the coming weeks. Plunge organizers have set a goal of raising $1,000,000 to support the Special Olympics in Michigan. Visit the Polar Plunge website for more information about this cause or to learn how to get involved. To contribute to this effort, Senator Ananich will be participating in the annual Legislative Plunge on February 27th. You may visit Senator Ananich’s 2014 Polar Plunge page here. Hearings on Main Street Fairness and Primary Care Legislation This week, the Senate Economic Development Committee will hold a hearing on Main Street Fairness legislation that Senator Ananich has long supported. The legislation would bring sales tax laws up-to-date and level the playing field so all Michigan businesses can compete fairly. The US Supreme Court recently denied a case that would have struck down a similar law in New York; this decision paved the way for similar legislation to pass in Michigan in response to Congress’s failure to act. In addition, the Senate Appropriations Committee will discuss SB 648 and SB 649, bills aimed at promoting access to primary care throughout the state. Senator Ananich has worked closely with Senator Moolenaar on these bills and believes they are vital to increasing access to care. Fight Continues for Unemployment Extension and Minimum Wage Increase This week, Senator Jim Ananich and several cosponsors introduced two Resolutions calling upon Congress to extend emergency jobless benefits and increase the minimum wage. Senator Ananich recently met with unemployed constituents to discuss the importance of these changes. The proposal would also require the minimum wage to be incrementally increased over time to reflect cost-of-living increases. Please continue to voice your support for these important policies aimed at reducing poverty in our district and state. Assistance with Tax Preparation As many of you know, the IRS will begin accepting tax returns this Friday, January 31st. Michiganders have until April 15th to submit their 2013 tax return or request an extension. Free tax preparation resources are available by calling 211 or visiting the Michigan Economic Impact Coalition at their website here. To assist with this effort, our office staff and interns will be attending a Treasury Department training in early February to learn how to effectively respond to constituent inquiries regarding Michigan tax returns.
