It is easy to stand by the people of our own country during times of injustice and oppression--many activists are easily invoked by their emotional attachment to the country that holds their family history, memories, and culture. But it’s important to not let pride consume us. To me, pride should be reserved for something you achieve or attain on your own, not something that happens by accident of birth. Being Lebanese is not a skill, it’s a genetic happening. And the challenge lies in opening our hearts and reaching out to countries we have never visited. Groups of people we have never known. And cultures that are different from our own. I of course applaud those who dedicate energy to helping the country they love during times of hardship. But I strive to be like the individuals who do not limit their energy to only one corner on the map and have hearts that ache for countries that they do not call home. I strive for less pride and more love for humanity.
