It is every Indian’s right to possess a passport. Unless, of - TopicsExpress

It is every Indian’s right to possess a passport. Unless, of course, there are good reasons for not providing one. Crime is one of these. Even a magistrate can rule that a passport be surrendered. Which, by implication, means a person is free to travel overseas, provided the country of destination provides a visa. The host country, for its own reasons, may provide the visa or for its own reasons, even deny it to the applicant. It is not India’s, or for that any Indians business, to inform another country not to grant a visa. When such requests go from here to another country, that country may laugh in their sleeves. For, it shows that Indians don’t know how to manage their affairs. When 65 lawmakers petition the United States President, seek that a visa be denied to Narendra Modi to prevent him from visiting that country, it takes on the dimensions of a farce. It has been now disclosed that 25 MPs from Rajya Sabha, and 40 from the lower chamber, Lok Sabha, had written to Barack Obama between November and December 2012 to “respectfully urge you (US President) to maintain the current policy of denying Mr. Modi a visa to the United States”.
