It is heartening to know that Prime Minister Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif is seriously concerned about Pakistan Medical Dental Council (PMDC), mushroom growth of medical universities and recognition of substandard medical colleges and increment of medical seats in government and private sector medical schools. Recent visit of Federal Health Minister Ms. Saira Afzal Tarar to PMDC office shows that government has to take some initiative regarding medical education in Pakistan. We appeal to the government to organize PMDC which can regulate medical education without pressure and any influence of vested interest group. The medical education system has deteriorated because of incompetence of PMDC. The vested interest group and the mafia sitting in the government and private sector medical colleges are involved in blatant corruption which needs to be investigated. We believe that a high power Commission should investigate the irregularities committed by Medical Council regarding recognition of Medical colleges all over Pakistan. Now they are producing glorified MBBS quacks that are causing havoc in health care system. There is a need to regularize all aspects of medical education and training in the country. We are also extremely concerned about the functioning of Medical Universities where the colleges and different departments are functional without proper faculties. Some of the medical universities are heavenly and needlessly involved in construction of buildings and procurement of expensive equipment. In Karachi, Dow International Medical College is functional under Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) without minimal staffing as per requirement of PMDC. University is charging heavy fee and donations in foreign currency. This situation is not acceptable. We hope the new federal Health Minister will make sure that PMDC election should be held as soon as possible and all those doctors with vested interest will leave PMDC. We need a powerful autonomous and independent PMDC for regularization of medical universities and medical colleges in Pakistan. We also hope that the provincial government should also investigate the functioning of medical universities in provinces. We also demand that the federal health Minister should instruct the Chairman Commission of inquiry for private medical colleges to complete its investigation as soon as possible and report should be made public. We hope that all provincial government should develop their system of surprise inspections of medical colleges, medical universities and teaching hospitals in the interest of poor and suffering patients.
