It is interesting that the Sarplaninac and cattle are mentioned in the breed standard, one of the few, if perhaps the only livestock guardian dog where cattle protection against predatory animals are also mentioned in the breed standard. I know many cattle ranchers who scoff at the idea of using LGD within their cattle operations. The idea is dismissed without even trying, and yet it is often the cattle ranchers who complain about predators killing and maiming their stock. perhaps, these ranchers should take a closer look at these old world breeds? The original type of the breed has been maintained solely in such parts of the country where intense cattle breeding is still prevailing and where this dog still can play its original role of a guardian and protector of the cattle herds against predatory animals.
