It is morning and the first slanted rays of sunlight have just begun to show thru the trees leaving the dark lawn dappled with light spots. Two doves almost too fat to fly arrive at the feeder oblivious to the fact that the more they eat, the bigger target they will make for hunters later in the fall. This pair may have been around since spring and have raised their offspring under the shelter of our porch. Now the smaller birds begin to gather: the house wrens with their red markings and Carolina chickadees with their black caps, all taking turns as if the feeder was a soup kitchen and they were respectful of the provisions made for them. The hummingbirds are late risers and seem to know there is fresh nectar waiting for them that the other birds will not touch. So they slumber invisible among the leaves and branches waiting for full daylight before making an appearance. Unlike our chaotic world, nothing disturbs the orderly and peaceful assembly as the back yard comes to life for another day.
