It is my understanding that there is a poll here which I am - TopicsExpress

It is my understanding that there is a poll here which I am blocked from seeing that may be a little biased or falsely represent an email exchange between Jamie Deline (creator of the poll) and myself. The email refers to me cutting transit in relation to a discussion involving running buses empty or with 1 or 2 people. So here is the email exchange, for you to make your own informed decisions on rather than reading into the misleading remarks of others. The top is my responses and the bottom is the original email. Thank you for your time and feel free to contact me directly if you have any questions to these topics or anything else. As always I believe in being honest and open with any residents who contact me for information or my opinion. Email in response to questions: Hi Jamie, Sorry if these are not the answers you are looking but I believe on being honest as opposed to trying to buy votes with false promises. 1.) No I do not promise to leave transit alone. When a bus runs every half hour with two people on it I believe we should change to hourly service and let all 4 take it on the hour. It may mean someone has to show up a half hour early to work if want to use transit, but with our tax situation and cost of fuel etc I do no believe mass transit systems were designed or are sustainable to be a shuttle for two people. Do I promise to have a transit open house to review looking at routes to improve transit and increase ridership etc, yes. I am not anti-transit, and do appreciate the service it provides but running with 1-2 people daily on a route is not sustainable. 2) The CDSSAB (which I am on the board) just completed a 10 year housing plan which was approved by the province just a few months ago. This plan will be put into action and help address this issue. I believe the CDSSAB is the proper agency to carry this forward as they have qualified housing staff and receive money from the province and municipality. I dont believe it is prudent to start spending additional city funds to try and address this issue. We have developed over 200 multi residential units in the last 4 years and with layoffs at the mine and other organizations in town I believe we are on the other side of the housing curve now. I will support the municipality requirements as laid out in the CDSSAB plan which has 17 recommendations and I will continue to work with them as a board member to help implement the plan to reduce wait times on low-income, geared to income rental accommodations. 3) The intersection of Cameron and Wilson is under review right now and will be one of the issues for the next council to deal with. I believe something needs to change here. I brought the installation of a 4-way stop at Preston and Commercial to the table which was approved and installed, and more recently one at Poplar and Avenue which I asked for approval despite it being recommended that it was not needed. This was also approved. Cameron and Wilson, I will wait for the report but I will be pushing for a change to be made. 4) Mountjoy and Wilson / 3rd is the most awkward intersection in the city. I am not sure what can be done at this intersection as it is offset and really a nightmare for vehicles and pedestrians. It too will be looked at but unless we make one of the streets a one way or perhaps both this one has me undecided on what the best approach would be and I would need more time to consider and a recommendation from engineering. Steven Black P.Eng. City Councillor Ward 5, Timmins Original email with questions: ________________________________________ From: ONTERA [[email protected]] Sent: October 8, 2014 1:54 PM To: Steven Black Subject: QUestions to help me cast my vote I have a few questions for you that I would like answered before I cast my vote. 1. There was one council meeting I watched on line not that long ago, and you were making a comment about a couple of routes on transit only having a few people in the morning and feel that we shouldn’t have bus’s on the road for that many people, keeping in mind it is only for the first couple of runs then after that it picks up. Do you promise to leave the transit service alone and find ways to make it even better rather then wanting to cut out more pints of service? 2. Due to the waiting list for low income housing do you have any plans to help solve the issue and cut down the numbers of people who are on the waiting list, if so what are a few of those plans? (I hope its not what I heard from many of the councilors when I pushed this topic we don’t have any million/billion dollar companies in the city so relying on public entities will not do anything but make the list grow further and further, I would like to suggest going after both levels of government and get the necessary funding we need to help sovle the issue a lot faster) 3. I have made numerous suggestions to make some streets safer for pedestrians and so far a slight change has took place. What are your thoughts on getting a four way stop put up at Cameron and Wilson, due to the fact that I have lived on Belanger and have seen numerous accidents at this intersection more so then Preston and Wilson? 4. Also many times when I have tried to cross Mount Joy at 2nd and or Wilson there have been many times when I came close to getting hit cause some people don’t want to treat it as a cross work and or are in a hurry or don’t care about anyone’s safety. So what’s your thought on getting lights put up at maybe the corner of 2nd and Mount Joy to help improve the safety of those crossings as people don’t care about pedestrians crossing at either Wilson or 2nd, or do you think there maybe another way to help solve this issue? I hope that you will take the time to answer these questions to help make my decision easier when casting my vote. Thanks Jamie
