It is officially the morning of the opening ceremony and building of the 71 new homes at Pelican Park will start today:) Thought you might like this story from one of the beneficiaries who will be receiving her home at the end of the week Mrs Elizabeth Heynes Elizabeth has been on the government house waiting list for 19 years and has always lived in the back yard of her mother’s house. She has 4 children, daughters Lesley Ann 30, Larnia 21, Sonia 13 and son Lyle 27. She also has 7 grandchildren 5 of them living with her and the family. Her daughter Larnia’s baby will be born in September. Elizabeth chars three days a week, her son works and her daughter Lesley Ann receives grants for her two children. The house has three rooms, lounge/kitchen and two bedrooms. Six people share one bedroom and five people share the second bedroom. She says it is like a drain when it rains and gets continually flooded during the winter rains. She just wants to be able to say she has her own place no matter how many of the family are with her. She and her granddaughter both get sick continually due to the wet and cramped conditions. Her daughter Lesley Ann and grandson Shakil have TB and Elizabeth is concerned that the family’s health is getting worse. She is a very quiet person and feels very disappointed in herself that should hasn’t been able to give her children a proper home. Elizabeth and her family are approved beneficiaries who will receive a house as soon as construction is completed. They will not only benefit from the housing project but also from the community development work that Habitat is facilitating seeking to address some of the critical challenges facing this community. Thank you for making a difference in the life of this family.
