It is related on the authority of the Muhaddith = Ahmad az-Zarruq and Sidi ibn Ajiba that Imam Malik ibn Anas {May Allah have mercy upon them} said: Whomever studies Jurisprudence {ta-fa-qa-ha} and didnt study Sufism = Ta-saw-wuf will be corrupted; and whoever studied Sufism and didnt study Jurisprudence will become a heretic; and whoever combined both will reach the Truth. من تصوف و لم يتفقه فقد تزندق و من تفقه و لم يتصوف فقد تفسق و من جمع بينهما فقد تحقق Man tasawaffa wa lam yatafaqa faqad tazandaqa, wa man tafaqaha wa lam yatasawaf faqad tafasaq, wa man tasawaffa wa tafaqaha faqad tahaqaq. ~ Therefore Islam necessitates deeds, and there is no self-purification {Ta-saw-wuf} without knowledge of the Law, as the external rulings of Allah are not known except by knowledge of the Law; and there is no knowledge of the Law without self-purification, as there is no deed without sincerity in self-application, and there is neither without belief. For this reason, the Law requires all of them by definition, just as the body and the soul necessitate each other, as one cannot exist or be complete in the world except in conjunction with the other. That is the meaning of Imam Maliks saying: He who practices Ta-saw-wuf without learning Sacred Law. {Related by Sidi ibn Ajiba in his Iqaz al-Himam 5-6}
