It is still summer, but there is a strong hint of fall in the air - TopicsExpress

It is still summer, but there is a strong hint of fall in the air tonight. Much of the day was cloudy and windy, so the 73 degree temperature seemed cooler than it was. Partial clearing near sunset revealed the sun going down as an orange ball in a haze of agricultural dust and smoke from distant range fires. You can smell the smoke in the air. Grain harvest is well underway, but in many cases is a salvage operation due to the recent heavy rains. The first of the leaves on the weeping birch trees are turning to gold. The early sunset is a reminder that the leaves turn in response to decreasing light, and not to frost. Tonights low is predicted in the low 40s, so no danger of frost yet, but it could happen any night now. Time to enjoy the last of the summer flowers, and drink in the heady scent of the Butterfly Bushes. The autumn wave of Aster blossoms is just starting, with a few buds showing color. Summers always go by too fast!
