It is troubling to me that the message out of the NATO meeting is a commitment to increase military spending of all member countries as if the only way they can think is in terms of bombs and bullets. Tanks and missiles are the last resort of a failed global community just as armored vehicles and teargas is the last resort of a failed free market class system in American cities. People take up arms and fall prey to ideologies of hate when socio economic systems fail to provide equal and widespread access to educational opportunity and economic opportunity. Our leaders have bought into a world view of domination and acquisition rather than collaboration and conservation. We are taught to be consumers as if that is our only responsibility as citizens. But we are more than consumers. We are parents, grandparents, teachers, artists, scientist, clergy, volunteers, poets, builders and more! We have the biggest military in the world in the US. Just one of our Aircraft carrier groups is more powerful than most of the worlds militaries. Yet we have millions of our children going to bed hungry every night here. We have hundreds of thousands living on the streets many of whom themselves military veterans. It is time we get our country and our allies to make a commitment to increasing educational spending and sharing renewable energy technology, training doctors to work in rural areas here and around the world! Lets work at building a more educated and just framework for a peaceful planet for the sake of all of families and those yet to come.
