It is understandable if a man pursues the course of a political office holder because he is rendering a service that has been paid for. What about the man without financial benefit who commits enormous resources for the entrenchment of his candidate. It is the height of buffoonery if such support will eventually turn around and punish him! We see that happening a lot in the Nigerian political space and it is as a result of altruism (ethology). In behavioural ecology, animals show such behaviour to increase the success of their genes within a population. It is achieved by helping relatives that share those genes. In fact the action reduces their own fitness while increasing the fitness of others. Some take it to the extreme, as seen in certain species of spiders. The mother surrenders herself to be eaten by her offsprings! (matriphagy). Charles Darwin brilliantly tied the connection when he stated- Though man has risen to the top of the organic scale and had developed a formidable intellect, yet he still bears in his bodily frame the indelible stamp of his lowly origin. The Yorubas hit the mark with the words- Ise eniyan, ni ise eranko! That explains the kinsmen of the president or supporters within his axis. What about outsiders who jump into the train. They have created an imaginary gene that needs to be protected in Jonathan (psychology). That leaves us with members of the presidents household who are up against his utter cluelessness. Those ones have broken out of the cage of self in an evolutionary sense (Richard Dawkins selfish genes) to understand- WHAT IS BEST FOR ALL BRINGS THROUGH HAPPINESS!
