It is with great regret that I voted for a tax increase today as it goes against everything I stand for. Without this increase and budget cuts McLennan County would have gone bankrupt forcing layoffs and taking the budget decisions out of local hands. Today in Commissioner’s Court, I along with @ab_perry and @scottmfelton voted to set the Tax Rate at .535292 per $100 of value. This amount is not the final amount but only the cap rate we can set. Hopefully this amount will be lowered as we are still in the preliminary stages of the budget process. At the beginning of the county budget process McLennan County had an $8.9 million dollar budget deficit. There are many factors that went into this deficit one mainly being the past decisions of past Commissioners Courts not budget properly for seen expenditures. The budget process has been open and fair. I commend the department heads and elected officials for all their hard work finding the cuts we have asked for. I especially commend Stan Chambers and Frances Bartlett for their hard work putting the budget together.
