It is with great sadness that we announce that Dr. Dennis C. Widen passed away on Thursday, October 16 after a brief illness. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, October 21 at 5:30pm in SWOSUs Fine Arts Auditorium. A live stream of the memorial will available at this address: youtu.be/7MmGTI7aLnY Dennis C. Widen, 65 of Weatherford, passed away suddenly Thursday of pancreatic cancer at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Dennis was born March 22, 1949 in Algona, Iowa. Upon graduating from Corwith-Wesley High School, Dennis received his Bachelor and Master’s degrees in music from Drake University in 1971 in Des Moines, Iowa. Dennis later received his Doctorate Degree in Philosophy from the University of Oklahoma in 1999. Dennis taught music education and piano at the University of Western Montana in Dillon, Montana. Dennis recently finished his 13th year of teaching at Southwestern Oklahoma State University on the Weatherford campus. Dennis is survived by five brothers and their families including Dean and family of Waterloo, Iowa, Doug and LuAnn and family of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Duane and Cathy and family of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Dwight and Roberta and family of Latimer, Iowa, and Dan and Laurie and family of Ripley Tennessee along with nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Dennis was preceded in death by hisfather, Charles, in 1970 and his mother Doris in 1990. Dennis has received numerous recognitions for outstanding teaching in the music profession. Dennis’ passion for teaching music was “second to none.” Dennis was involved in numerous musical activities throughout his lifetime, in schools, churches and music performances. Dennis has traveled world-wide in the pursuit of teaching music excellence to all his students. Dennis loved being a teacher, especially at SWOSU. Dennis also enjoyed working and spending time with his colleagues.
