It made me really happy to see that most all the comments were upbeat. The only one that wasnt all too high and flying wasnt dismissing Doulas at all, simply just upset with how they were treated during their experience. It makes sense, there are always going to be a few that wont take it seriously, or just make mistakes. I think most people dont really realize how important a Doula can be, though. That emotional support is a key part of having a birth. The mother needs to be comfortable and feel safe, which a Doula can provide. Most people think it unnecessary or just an extra expense that they dont want to pay, but I personally think its a very good idea; definitely not just an extra expense that isnt worth it. Some argue that doulas are an unnecessary financial cost at least, and can disrupt the patient’s relationship with medical professionals, leading to complications, at worst. Personally, the only people I find that think that a Doula disrupts patients relationship with medical professionals are the people that dont like the idea of it, that think Doulas are unnecessary, theyre just there to get it the way, they dont want whats best for the mother, etc. etc. In reality, the Doula educates the mother. Had I never asked about child birth, or actually looked into it, I wouldnt know a lot of things. Yes, expecting parents WILL look into it, but isnt it usually better to have a teacher help you go through something you dont completely understand? To be there to reassure you through everything, to know that theyre there to help you not to hurt you, and to help you understand what all is going to happen, what might happen, and plan the whole thing out? I dont know, it may be because I dont trust a lot of doctors that I think that most of them wont care all too much about the mother other than to get the baby out of her as quickly as possible and keep both of them alive. As far as I have heard, women are many times not given other options of comfort in the hospital. I dont know if its just that theyre told that they CANT move around, or if theyre just not told anything, not offered to move around, not told that it could help them. I understand not wanting to tire them out too much before the labour is properly underway, but there are so many options and suggestions that they could give the mother to actually make it a GOOD experience. So many women dont want to talk about their child birth because it wasnt too much of a good experience for them. The women who DO have a good experience, talk about it, LOVE to talk about it. A lot of what I see, is the mother being comfortable, being content, feeling like theyre in control. Its THEIR bodies, THEIR child, THEIR experience. Why arent they being informed? Why do they feel so powerless to what they can decide for themselves? Why are they not being encouraged to go with their natural instinct? Women have given birth naturally since the dawn of time, its natural, its life. People forget that women have been giving birth naturally for 4.5 million years, all animals give birth naturally. One of the reasons women hire a Doula is so that they can have the birth of their choice and NOT the medical community. There is a need at times for medical intervention for the health and welfare of the baby and or mother. Too many c sections take place because the OB and the hospital can charge lots for that service. - first comment I dont ever plan on birthing a child, personally, but if I WERE to birth a child, I would honestly want it to be a home birth. I dont want all the unnecessary things that the hospital might pretty much force on me. Ive heard enough stories that it has turned me off from that for good. The comfortable safe feeling that I would need, would only be provided from having the birth in my own home, with my (most likely) wife sitting there. Of course, there are definitely no plans to birth my own child. aDOPTION ALL THE WAY. But thats another rant for a different time. justgoingtostopnow.
