It may not be important to some, but Tiger will not compete in the 2014 U.S. Open. Disappointed, I am going to have to be content to watch the San Antonio Spurs slap the Miami Heat around; the Los Angles Kings thump on the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup finals; the U.S. Soccer Teams play in the World Cup competition; and the Red Soxs erratic winning and losing streaks. I was disappointed in California Chromes fourth place finish in the Belmont, and if you saw the race you would know that the jockey did not take my advice, taking the whip to Chrome down the stretch rather than whispering Stud Farm in his ear! I would have been more sympathetic to Chromes owners post-Belmont rant, if he had raised the issue of unfairness before, not after the race. He does have a point; it is not fair to race rested horses who did not participate in all three legs of the Triple Crown against horses that did. The question is this: In the interest of fairness, should we change the Triple Crown competition into a NASCAR-like point system or the PGAs FedEx Cup point system? Is there another way to address the fairness issue in Triple Crown competition? I think Chromes owner should challenge the horses that beat Chrome in the Belmont, that is, after they are all rested. A winner take all 1.5 mile long stakes race with each entrant putting up one million dollars. It could happen! Lets go back to the Spurs vs. the reigning champion Miami Heat series. The managers of the Spurs arena turned off the air conditioner and the Heat in Game 1. LeBron cramped up and the Heat lost. In Game 2 LeBron shot the lights out of the building, and with the help of his surrounding cast managed to steal one from the Spurs. Game 3 in Miami featured the hottest shooting (76%) ever recorded in a championship game as the Spurs jumped on Miami with the fury of a thousand jungle beasts. Even with Miami shooting 56% in one quarter, the Spurss rain of shots saw them leading at the half by 21 points. They caught some of the Heat players in the parking lot at half-time trying to sneak away; the officials made them come back and finish the game. But wait, wait! Is this deja vu all over again? Last year the Spurs led Miami 3-2 and lost the series when Miami won the final two games. But can Miami do it again? I am excited about Game 4. Miami can win but to do so LeBron, Dwayne Wade, and Chris Bosh all have to play well and Ray Allen and Mario Chalmers and the supporting cast have to contribute offensively and defensibly. They were sleep walking in game three, watching the Spurs bomb them like the British bombed Dresden during WWII. The Spurs are determined to win; if Tim, Tony, and Ginobili play well and get defensive and offensive help from Kawai Leonard and Forrest Diaw, Miami will be hard-pressed to win. I think the Spurs have more depth than Miami; if both teams play well the Spurs will win the series. The more I watch hockey, the more I like it! Its scary for a black man who knows little or nothing about hockey to predict that the Kings are going to win the series because even to my untutored-jaundiced eye they appear as the superior team. As I watched the fast-paced action, I kept counting the players for both teams because it seemed like the Kings had more players on the ice than the Rangers. But no; they just had better skaters and were slightly quicker than the rangers players. Who do i like in the U.S. Open? Rory Mcilroy is my pick to win it and next is Adam Scott if he can get his putter going. Phil Mickelson is always a threat, and I would not count out Jim Furyk or long-hitting Bubba Watson. My dark horse (no pun intended) is Steve Stricker. I hope Tiger returns to the tour; he makes the game more exciting to watch.
