It may sound odd but a happy event made me cry today. I suppose You could classify them as tears of joy, but regardless they unexpectedly arrived when our wonderful, old dog Candy was adopted. Candy has been here about six months and for the most part she has kept to herself. Because she is so old she is allowed to roam as much as she wants around the shelter grounds, she normally just rests near the office trailer. The couple that expressed interest in her walked in the gate and said they wanted to see Candy, as soon as they mentioned her name she got up from her resting spot and walked to them. It was almost like she was displaying the manners of a true southern lady, rising to her feet and introducing herself to them. It didnt take long and they decided she could come to their home and live with them. Candy once scolded me because I was letting the frustrations of life get to me. Today, as she was getting ready to leave she had a few more words. She said, Mr. Doug, I can still see a lot of frustration in the lives of you and Mrs. Wanda. I know yall worry about trying to improve things around here and feel bad when things dont happen as fast as you want, but look around and realize this is a place that gives a chance to live. There probably isnt a place within a hundred miles that would let an old, girl like me live, and with that I want to say thank you for your hospitality, thank you for providing for me for the last six months, and now Mr. Doug I am going to go home. I responded with a heartfelt, Candy it has been an honor having you at the shelter, the pleasure has been ours. She walked out of the gate, not with playful energy, but with the slow, grace of a true southern belle. Candy, a dog we will remember. - Doug
