It might sound silly but I’m really digging this new D’Angelo and the Vanguard record. I thought he was just some R&B singer, but this new record is really out there – bizarre arrangements, unconvential percussive sounds and textures, really interesting production techniques (everything from the mixing to weird filters and echoes on the instruments, really creative and odd vocal overdubs and harmonies). It feels like the bastard child of Sly Stone’s “There’s a Riot Goin’ On”, Prince’s “Sign of the Times” and Miles Davis’ “On the Corner”/“Tribute to Jack Johnson” era work – just as weird, dark and innovative. Some are already calling it a masterpiece, and I think I tend to agree. Highly recommended!
