It pisses me off when ignorant press like Bahamas press or Bahama News Ma Bey blame the entire Haitian population for anything that is done illegally in this country. So let me take a second to educate anyone on my page that has the same ignorant views towards Haitians in this country. As a Haitian Bahamian living in this country I do not applaud anything that is done illegally. As a Haitian Bahamian I too feel like the illegal entry in the Bahamas is a major issue that the powers to be has to address and needed to be addressed like yesterday. But come on guys we dont have to be so ignorant towards the entire Haitian race. Let me share some history with you guys. Prominent men in the clergy, politics, judiciary and across society were Haitian born Bahamians or Bahamians of direct Haitian parentage. Goodmans Bay is named after John Goodman, who by current Bahamian standards would be a Haitian. Stephen Dillet, the first man of colour to be elected to serve in the House of Assembly, would be by current Bahamian standards a Haitian. The same goes for Peter Laroda, who is also a former member of the House of Assembly. The three men were brothers. Anglican priest Canon Cooper is reputed to be a direct descendent of King Henri Christophe of Haiti, the black ruler who built the famous World Heritage Site in Haiti, the Citadel. Sir Arthur Foulkes, Bahamian civil rights activist, has a Haitian mother. Fred Smith, once appointed Queens Council, also has a Haitian mother. Check any number of Bahamian names Deveaux, Moncur, Bonimy, Bonamy, Godet, Benjamin, Paul, Dillet, Maynard, Martin, Darvel, Bethel, Nicolls and the list goes on, and you will find that they were originally Haitian names or have Haitian counterparts. The matter is further complicated because the British Empire forced immigrants from French colonies to anglicize their names. Many in the Lewis family, for example, were Louis. So check your surnames at the door before you make an ignorant remark about my Altidor, jean or Joseph. Im one of the educated ones so dont fear me embrace me for who I am and the positive contributions that Ive made and will continue to make here in this great Bahama Land.
