It seems every resource conversation in the region has “transportation” as a constant concern. As of Tuesday October 1st the city of Owen Sound will no long have a transit terminal. The city has chosen to shut the terminal to the public and is looking at possibly selling it. The United Way has many concerns with this plan. We are concerned that the bus drivers will not have a safe, warm place to take a break, have a hygiene break or have a central place to gather in the event of an emergency. For consumers, and especially our most vulnerable consumers, the loss of a warm location, loss of sanitation facilities as well as a place to resource transportation issue will create significant hardship. The proposed concept of local small business owners providing tickets and information is well meaning, but few stores will be open early enough for those using the system in the morning, to provide shelter. We are inviting people to join us at 1 pm on Monday September 30th to send a clear message to Owen Sound city council that the transit terminal plays an important role in the community and needs to stays open.
