It seems for network TV shows, the ever increasing likelihood of cancellation after the first season dictates a more Nolan-esque approach to presentation. (I dont mean gritty - good gravy we have enough gritty.) Nolan approached each of the Batman films as if it was the last one he would do. He left nothing on the table. He didnt assume hed be back for a sequel, and wasnt sure he wanted to be, either. So much of what Ive seen this year has been about world building instead of storytelling. And thats true of movies, too - and as someone whos a world building addict, I love it. But Im realizing more and more that world building does not equal story - the danger of world building is that you actually forget to tell a story because youre spending so long setting the table for things that arent relevant to THIS character. We love our franchises. But have we lost sight of the trees for the forest?
