It seems like the only unionists backing the Maze peace centre are “the DUP and the UDA”, Mike Nesbitt has said, CORRECTION: South Belfast UPRG. South Londonderry UPRG dont. UPRG Southlondonderry / East Tyrone will play no part or support in anyway the building of a Conflict Resolution Center at the Maze. We fully support the regeneration of that area and welcome the employment it will bring to many. However being such a large site with the potential for significant job creation and private sector investment, assessed at 5,000 jobs and £300m investment we are confident that the absence of any Conflict Resolution Center will not affect its success in any way, shape or form, in fact we believe the site will be all the better without it and better still when it has been cleansed of the nondescript yet listed H Blocks. A Conflict Resolution Center detailing our past could be an extremely valuable tool in showing visitors from around the world how futile the IRAs terror campaign actually was but such a center must be placed on a neutral site. The Maze is not such a place, it has already become a place of pilgrimage for Irish republican sympathizers and as such is in no way acceptable to the community who bore the brunt of that very same Irish republican terror machine. We believe that the allocation of £18m of EU finance to this proposal is wrong because it is discriminatory and can reasonably be considered offensive and divisive which could cause harm to reconciliation in Northern Ireland. The EU need to urgently adhere to its stated standards and protocols and withdraw consent for the Conflict Resolution Centre expenditure. We have been opposed to this segment of the Maze regeneration project since it was first muted and more recently have engaged extensively with the local community, to that end we would encourage everyone to sign any petitions of opposition. https://facebook/southlondonderry.uprg.5
