It sickens me to think about the poor Zimbabwean baby elephants - TopicsExpress

It sickens me to think about the poor Zimbabwean baby elephants transported to China in cages for display in zoos. It is not only wrong but also unfair to these little creatures and their herds. The smuggling has caused emotional terror to this calves especially with the methods used to capture them. ‘Armed men drove their mothers off by firing over their heads and when the babies could not keep up they were dragged into captivity’ I consider this a monstrous act. Elephants are very intelligent and posses high family bonds, they even mourn for their dead, worse still, these calves are so young, they need their mothers for protection and guidance separating them from their families will mean minimal chances of survival. They will be much traumatised as scientifically they are weaned at least for 5years, before the young males are driven away to form a herd of their own while young females are left behind in the female herd. To me this is Abduction and disruption of the eco-system. Locking these animals in zoos is like putting them in jail, African elephants are born to roam free and feed in their natural habitat. In China the calves will be kept indoors with very low temperatures unlike the warm African climate they are probably used to. By taking these calves out, the population of elephants in Zimbabwe will automatically reduce; the young elephants if only given a chance would be able reproduce and supplement the population which is highly affected by the rampant poaching in the country. I would urge the Government of Zimbabwe to cease making such deals with the Chinese or any other country, Elephants are not just animals, they are our African Heritage and all countries with elephants roaming their parks should count themselves lucky. Let us Save Elephants!.
