It speaks volumes about Youmacon to see how they respected and responded to artists feedback over the weekend. Never in my almost 20 year history of going to cons and being in AA have I seen a mass (partial) refund given to all artists that wanted it. Thats a major hit to the conventions bottom line for sure and a decision that could not have been made lightly. Weve been to Youmacon since year 2, and Beth Hill has always stopped by our table to say hi. I know shes one of the largest supporters of the artists as well, regularly making a purchase from as many artists as she can throughout the weekend. Please remember next year that she is listening to you, and to be appreciative of the massive effort it takes to even listen to the feedback. The amount of negative criticism this year was a bit too much to direct and shoulder on one person. This weekend was full of trends I started pointing out years ago at other conventions. Personally, I am winding down and getting out of Artist Alley within the next year to focus on my day job career. Youmacon sales have declined for us ever since it moved from the RenCen hallways. The competition for the shrinking dollars in the already stretched pockets of attendees is something that I feel has detracted from both my personal art quality and the artist alley overall in our fandom. I wish all the best to everyone that perseveres, but in general I would never recommend artist alley as any more than a hobby to anyone. For those of you that cleared the line and made it in the black, great job, but be warned that a day will come where youll likely take a hit and need to plan accordingly. For those of you that took a hit this time, same advice in planning for the future. Ive seen AA grow from a few artists with sketchbooks at some tables in a hallway to massive villages of artists and crafters. Its nice to make a few bucks now and then, but Im looking forward to just going back to doing art for personal enjoyment and gifts for friends. Best wishes to all.
