It still amazes me that after three years the disciples were clueless that Judas was an unbeliever and would betray Jesus to His death. Maybe Judas was a jokester about serious things that hid his true identity. Maybe he was serious and hard-lined like the Pharisees with a form of religion. Maybe before the Holy Spirit was given at Pentecost the disciples were not very discerning. Whatever the reason, they didnt know who would betray Jesus. We shouldnt be cynical about the faith of those around us but maybe we shouldnt be surprised by the evil in the human heart either. “After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke.” (John 13:21–22, ESV)
