It used to be called Officer Friendly. My neighbor is an Officer Friendly. First of all, he lives with us. As such, he makes us comfortable around police officers by the friendly manner in he relates to us (like these cops in the video are doing). This is where it starts--establish a better relationship between NOPD and the Community. But that takes MORE officers, for more reaching out patrolling--not just responding to a call. Young lack boys have to grow up seeing them reaching out (as opposed to just responding to a call). Perhaps, this might help the cycle of disillusionment and distrust--WITH EVERYTHING, especially law enforcement. BEFORE NEXT ELECTION, (like starting now) WARN (its YOUR vote that puts them in that position) Gusman (or whomever) what you will be voting for. Then track the progress between now and next election. We couldnt stop those who are IN prison; however, let us devote more effort to steering young black males AWAY from prison. Good cops who interact with the community (not just at campaign time Mr. Sheriff) may, just may, go a long way in changing young black males perspective on life and perception about law enforcement officers. I personally know some good cops whom I consider friends, who would be great ambassadors in this regard. Pay them well to do so, Mr. Sheriff. Keeping young black males out of jail will be well worth the investment. (Just one concerned citizens perspective.) GBJ
