It was 30 years ago, in 1984, that I began what would become an almost three decade career as a movie theatre manager. I started out at JF Theatres in Baltimore as an assistant manager. There was a group of us who had movies in our blood. Our leader was Dominic Wagner, whose uncle Frank worked in the projection booth and taught most of us how to thread a projector for the first time. Within a couple of years most of us had our own theatre. Dom was first, taking over the Yorkridge. We were young, fairly good looking and felt invulnerable. Our group was called the Honeydippers (dont ask), a name given to us by Leon Sprouse, who trained many of us in how to take over a multiplex. We all had the same schedules so we traveled in a pack. For some reason my first thought of Dominic is of him being able to light his farts! I dont know why but it makes me smile. Especially the time he did it wearing polyester pants. :-) Tuesday night was our Friday, and you could usually find us closing down Christophers and then heading out to a late night dinner in Little Italy. Dominic passed away today at the all too young age of 57! Many of the movie theatre marquees in Baltimore are paying tribute to him...a tribute much deserved. Rest in Peace, my friend. Ill see you again in the big projection booth in the sky!
