It was a dark and stormy night, and the float on the sump pump was jammed against the side of the sump opening. So far the flow into the sump was at a trickle. There might be just enough time to get to the garage, back the car out, get to the workbench and find the giant screwdriver and the three pound hammer. A flash of brilliance came while bounding up the stairs. Theoretically, one could save valuable time by going through the car! Success! (The mess from the travel mug could be mopped up later.) Okay, long story short: Sump pump problem fixed. Oh, bed felt good. The rain stopped, and the house was quiet. Except for a thin, high-pitched whistle. Oh, God! It was the dreaded nose hair whistle. The facial muscle move-the-nose from side to side did not work. It seemed like the whistle was a C above high C. Crossing the eyes and stretching the upper lip down only increased the noise. Deep breaths didn’t work. The cat jumped off the bed and streaked down the hall. A forefinger against the sides of the nose had no effect. It was time to go in after it. END CHAPTER ONE
