It was a great day to visit my friend, Inspector Dean McGowan and his team at Fawkner Police Station and Inspector Lisa Hardeman and her team at Broadmeadows Police Station, to discuss community safety, as your Napthine Government unveiled an $18 million upgrade of the Victoria Police Academy for the next generation. Your Napthine Government’s major investment in the Police Academy had provided Victoria Police with state-of-the-art facilities to recruit and train police and Protective Services Officers (PSOs) well into the future. Your Coalition Government is making a considerable investment in the men and women who enforce the law and keep our community safe. We are committed to ensuring that our dedicated police officers have the tools, resources and facilities they need to do their job safely and effectively. As of today, there are 1,700 additional police on the beat in Victoria compared with November 2010 when we were elected. This meets our $602 million commitment made to the Victorian community at the 2010 election. This investment, along with 940 PSOs, represents the single largest law and order recruitment exercise in Victoria’s history. The $18 million investment in operational training and safety tactics facilities at the Police Academy is part of your Napthine Government’s commitment to building a safer Victoria and will provide expert training to the next generation of police recruits. The Academy upgrade includes a $1.4 million Hydra computerised incident simulation system, which allows recruits to experience routine policing events, using audio-visual simulations of a range of real-life situations. Real-life scenarios recruits can be faced which include riots, terrorism, shootings, floods, fires, train derailments, building collapses, explosions and chemical spills. Other upgrade works include a 25-metre firing range, replica train platform to simulate real-life training scenarios for PSOs, ten modular classrooms for training as well as additional office space, and extra parking for 1,000 vehicles. In addition to the 1,700 extra police your Napthine Government is on track to deploy 940 PSOs to rail stations across the network by November. Already, there are more than 800 PSOs now patrolling rail stations across the state from 6pm until after the last train every night. Public safety is paramount, and your Coalition Government is doing its part to ensure our streets and rail network are as safe as possible.
