It was a great hike yesterday to break free from modern society and return back to nature. Always starting with asking permission, I blew my kulo and it echoed through mountains and down to the ocean. Once we felt our spirits in tuned we began our journey. It was a beautiful blue day after some isolated showers and nature seemed to be out and about with duk duk everywhere, birds in the sky, guihan in the rivers, mosquitoes, and close calls with the babuis. The oceans power of the swells was evident from all the storms and past swells we have been having these past couple months. Rocks, shells, and drift wood was pushed far inland from the shore by waves that changed the landscape of the beach. We made our way to visit our ancestors and clean their latte site. On arrival they made their presence know with several wild pigs . One being a giant that tested us by trying to establish dominance. Grunts, screams, huffing, and puffing this pig echoed the mountains, but quietly left after it realized we were not there as a threat. After the pigs left all the mosquitoes in the jungle swarmed us. We built fires and proceeded to cleaning the latte site. I try to come down here to clean and preserve this site for it was the first latte site I have ever been to. There is always the presence of our ancestors and spirits all around us when we are there. It definitely is another realm of life when stepping foot into their jungle. I am forever grateful for the spirit they continue to give me through this air, land, ocean, and culture they have provided us. After cleaning the site we decided to take pictures with our signs for the Our Islands Are Sacred Photo Campaign and show our support for preserving and protecting our islands and oceans for future generations. And to prove good karma exists, we were given a gift our laguana (sour sop) on our way out back to the beach showing that our island does provide. We all worked together to make a bbq pit of rocks, serving platter from drift wood and banana leaves, and benches from washed up tree trunks. After all that cleaning we were hungry and tatiyas, Spanish sausage, sausages, grilled apples and bananas hit the spot! After we digested we headed back up to be greeted by the moon rising over the mountains. Exhausted from the hike and cleaning, I blew my kulo giving thanks and praise for an awesome day in paradise. It was just another day to realize that #OUR ISLANDS ARE SACRED. Each and every one of them.
