It was about that time of the year when the military academy would be relatively empty. Spring had finally arrived, and with it came a short reprieve for students and faculty to return home for a couple of weeks. For some time now the excitement and anticipation that thrummed through the air was almost tangible, and at last the day had come for people be with their families and distant friends and to have fun and relax. However, this was not the case for Mai. Even though she did have a home - and a prestigious one at that - it was absolutely impossible for her to return. At least, not as she currently was. As a result, Mai was left on her behind at the academy while Tsubaki and the others returned home. Of course, they had offered to take her in for the spring break, but she couldnt help but politely decline, much to her regret. She had other plans in mind, and with the academy relatively empty, it was a golden opportunity that she couldnt pass up. For the time being she had taken to walking about the forests that surrounded the school. She had become lost plenty of times before with her misadventures with her friends, and it was about time that she wanted to familiarize herself with the lay of the land. After all, it was a vital first step toward a goal she intended to pursue. Stopping in the shade of a lush and towering tree, she decided to take a break and have a drink of water from a flask that she brought with her. She had been walking for several hours now, but even though the weather was relatively cool, all the hiking she did up and down hills was becoming a work out. This place seems so peaceful now that no one is around, she said to herself while she looked up at the green canopy high above her, and squinted a bit as the speckling rays of light pierced between the layers of leaves and fell into her eyes. Now that I think about it, I dont remember the last time I was able to be alone like this.
