It was destined to be one of those days. Despite evidence to the contrary, clouds decided they wanted to overstay their welcome today. Just enough moisture in the atmosphere kept many of us underneath a dreary blanket, with only far south Alabama escaping the cloud cover for sunshine this afternoon. Well continue to play the waiting game overnight, but clouds will eventually lose the battle with sunshine returning for a solid stretch of days... TONIGHT: As of this writing, clear skies have finally broken out across the Wiregrass while overcast holds tight elsewhere. Skies are mainly clear from Geneva through Dothan. A few breaks are developing from Andalusia into Troy & Eufaula. But mainly cloudy conditions remain elsewhere. Satellite loops show the clouds gradually eroding, but its been a painfully slow process. Trying to pinpoint exactly when those clouds will finally disappear is a challenging task, especially considering the history of fooling us thus far. The timing of the clearing is not an insignificant matter...it will be critical to our eventual overnight lows. If clouds hold on longer, temperatures will not fall as fast as they would under clear skies. We continue to support the notion of gradual clearing areawide, so will forecast low temperatures under the assumption of clear skies. That means lows areawide should range anywhere from the upper 20s to mid 30s. Definitely a cold one. THIS WEEK: Once we ditch the clouds, sunshine will dominate our weather for the next several days. A slow warming trend will follow, with temperatures rising into the 60s by Tuesday and near 70 degrees into Thursday. Its looking more and more like the tail end of the week into next weekend will bring about the return of active weather to Alabama. A frontal boundary could be hanging out across the region and it may take some time before a final push of energy clears us of rain chances. Expect showers/storms to return by Friday and could linger for a few days. We may have to watch the progression of things for perhaps a little severe weather, but were still way too far down the road to write anything in stone.
