It was eight years ago today, I graduated from the U.S. Coast Guard bootcamp in Cape May, NJ. Ill never forget that feeling as I stood on that cold pier in Boston, Mass 12 days later as the USCGC Seneca steamed into port towards me. I stood there in my brand new dress uniform, as nervous as could be, as she was on her final stretch home from her latest endeavors. Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty raced through my young mind as that massive white ship drew closer. The line handlers on deck were ready and awaiting their commands. She was closing in on the pier fast and strong, 10ft!!! yells a deck supervisor on the forecastle. Then, with all her glory and strength, she brutally slammed into the pier, knocking a massive hole into her hull just behind her glorious Coast Guard Stripe. I hear an outburst of cussing come from the bow of the ship as my new chief stomped around with the fury only a Boatswain s Mate could own. I knew then, I made the right choice in my career.
