It was exactly today a decade ago, the 9.1 magnitude earthquake in Sumatra, Indonesia triggered devastating tsunami waves across the Indian Ocean, including the Andaman Sea of Thailand. Phang Nga, Krabi, Phuket, Ranong, Satun and Trang in the South of Thailand are the areas affected by the waves. There were over 5000 casualties in Thailand. The waves wiped several beaches destroying houses, hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and fishing boats. The tourism and fishing dependent local economy was vastly hit. Despite the tragic, it raised the awareness of such natural phenomenon to the whole nation and led to the immediate installation of the tsunami warning system on the eastern and western coastlines of Thailand. SOAS Thai Society remember those who lost their lives and offer condolence to their families and friends. #ThaiWordoftheDay Wave >> คลื่น KLEUN
