It was in January of 1982 when I joined my first fire department. Later that same year I enlisted in the Air Force where I spent 6 years as a USAF firefighter. After my discharge (honorable, I might add), I joined the Scio Fire District where I spent 20 years as a volunteer working in every imaginable position, from firefighter all the way up to Fire Chief, leaving that organization in 2010. In 1993 I got my paramedic certification, and in 1995 I started my career with the Salem Fire Department. Last night, I worked my last 24 hour shift. Sunday December 21st Ill go in for 4 hours, have pizza with my crew, and call it a day. Its been a great run, but its time to move on. There are many great memories (and some not so great), a few scary times, wonderful friends, and lots of laughs. As Jimmy Buffett would say... Its been a lovely cruise.
