It was never supposed to BE a democracy, but thats beside the point. We truly do live in an oligarchy, and the reason for that is simple: we stopped caring. The people who actually bother to vote on anything are a fraction of the registered voter base, which is a fraction of the citizenship who are ELIGIBLE to vote, who in and of themselves are a fraction of the whole population. And any parties candidates are chosen in primaries, which bring in even FEWER voters, so by the time its all said and done, you have public representatives who were chosen by a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of the whole population. It only makes sense that the rich and power-hungry would use that to their advantage. Power doesnt corrupt, it attracts the corrupt. Thus where we are today. If people would actually start paying attention to the world around them instead of worrying about the hospitalization of a one-hit wonders talentless offsrping, we might just get back to what this country was meant to be all along: a democratically-elected representative republic limited by the Constitution.
