It was on this day in 1862 that James M. McIntosh was commissioned Brigadier General in the Confederate Army. Though born and raised in Florida, McIntosh was serving in Fort Smith, AR, at the outbreak of the Civil War. By early 1862, he had already seen action in the war as a colonel with the 2nd Arkansas Mounted Rifles, and had gained a reputation for courageous (and often reckless) behavior. He would die only two months after becoming a Brigadier General, on March 7th, 1862, at the Battle of Pea Ridge. At Pea Ridge, McIntosh commanded a brigade in the division of Ben McCulloch, and served as his second-in-command. McCulloch was killed during the battle by Union infantry fire, requiring McIntosh to assume division leadership. McIntosh was leading an advance to recover McCullochs body when he was struck and killed by a bullet, less than fifteen minutes after McCullochs death. McIntosh is buried at Forth Smith National Cemetery.
