It was on this day in 1937 that Hormel unveiled one of the greatest canned meats known by the capital letters SPAM. It is made from pork and ham; and conveniently packaged in the blue cans. The meat is so popular that in Hawaii it is on the menu at MacDonalds. Of course it has been the butt of many jokes, even its name and what it stands for has several variations. The British call it Specially Processed American Meat or Supply Pressed American Meat. In America it has been known as Something Posing As Meat or Special Product of Austin, Minnesota (from which it originates). But the most likely one that I have seen would be Spiced Pork and Ham. SPAM also became a main staple in the Armed forces beginning with World War II. So, born on the 5th of July and fed to American troops, it doesnt get any more patriotic than that!
