It was on this night 6 years ago that my mother sat up in her bed for the very last time. My sister and i were sitting in her room w her and we were just sitting around laughing and talking when she sat up and asked for a cigarette. Of course this was the first time in two months that she was attempting to smoke, so we gave her one and tried to light it (it never lit). She puffed and puffed and puffed until she thought she was done. She put her smokie treat out and then she looked at me and she said Who are you ? these words broke my heart. It was at that time that i realized it wouldnt be much longer before her final breath was taken. As she layed back down i leaned in and kissed her on her forehead and as i did with tear soaked eyes i whispered I love you! And ill always be your baby boy! she looked back at me and smiled and closed her eyes for the last time. She quickly fell asleep and we made sure she was comfortable. The next three days were the absolute hardest for me, my sister and my brother. She faded in and out making noises to let us know she was still with us. On the night of December 13th 2008, i went into her room and sat next to her. She had started to begin crossing over. We all knew it wouldnt be much longer. I whispered into her ear its ok you can let go, were all going to be ok. I love you! she smiled in her sleep.... The next night December 14, 2008 @ 10:23pm I listened to her last heartbeat through a stethoscope that i still have in my memory box. This year while you celebrate Christmas with your loved ones, take a moment to think about those that have gone on. Those that dont have everyone they used to have for the holidays. Those that look a little sad during this time of year, give them a smile and let them know they are loved! Treat everyone with kindness, love, and laughter!
